Venue:

Other details:
Due to some confusion over the kick off time, the Bevers' lads were underprepared for the earlier start and looked completely disorganised as Rangers took an early lead. This setback proved only temporary as they scored 3 quick goals and took command of the game. They were helped by some questionable refereeing decisions and the dismissal of the Rangers' keeper midway through the first half didn't exactly brighten the visitors' mood! Maybe we should have been prepared for that as the ref threatened to book Damon Arrand for his Ravenelli-esque goal scoring celebration ... shirt over head not fully off isn't a yellow card offence ... so a dismissal (straight red!) for verbal dissent (without foul or abusive language we were told) didn't surprise us. Bevers continued to dominate and reached the half way mark comfortably 7-1 up. A half-time team talk from the manager consisting of two sentences (with lots of foul and abusive language!) was quickly forgotten by the Bevers as the second half got underway. They managed to concede 2 goals through inept defending and Rangers briefly threatened to find a way back into the game. Arrand and Duncan Eaton both got hat-tricks before being subbed and Tom Eaton, Phillips, Fairbank and Driscoll got onto the scoresheet as Bevers eventually scored 11. The score could and should have been much higher but sometime halfway through the second half, after the ref had dismissed a second Rangers' player for two yellow cards inside 30 seconds (one for a foul, the second presumably for dissent as he spelt his name out for his first booking), almost every Bevers' player decided they were strikers with players wasting possession by shooting from either an impossible angle or a longer distance than Paula Radcliffe covers on a training run. Manager Keith Dunn was noticeably aggrieved with his players and remonstrated regularly with them as they continued to play like a bunch of disorganised schookids rather than keeping discipline and shape and playing the ball in for those in the right position to actually have a shot at goal. Although happy with taking the 3 points, Bevers will be aware at training this week that the manager was disappointed and will be looking for them to improve on this performance in next weekend's game against Schnapps. Just a note for anyone who cares ... Kick off should have been at 2.30 pm according to the League handbook. Information relayed to me from both Pete Drayton and North Lincs Council suggested 3.00 pm ... My apologies therefore to District Rangers and ref Russell Powell for insisting it was 3.00 pm. Unfortunately for Mr. Powell, it was one of very few decisions he got right.

Venue:

Other details:
On a bright but cold Sunday morning, a depleted Bevers side found their opponents too good on an icy pitch which turned muddy as the sun warmed the surface. The opening 20 minutes or so were fairly even with Bevers even having chances to take the lead but once Evas had scored two quick goals, there was never any doubt as to who would win the game. They dominated until the last 15 minutes and scored 6 without reply. Bevers eventually got into the game as Evas relaxed perhaps too much and a late penalty from Fairbank after Arrand had been fouled did little to improve the manager's mood. The disappointment was compounded by the news that emergency signing Steve Woods' debut as substitute lasted only 10 minutes before he was taken to hospital. X-rays showed he had a broken shin and will spend 6-8 weeks in plaster. We all wish him well and have agreed to assist with his impending house move.

Bob Bedford Trophy Round 3
Broughton Town Colts
v
Bevers Joinery
|
 |
 |
Venue:
Broughton Playing Field
Other details:
A comprehensive defeat for the Bevers' boys at the hands of the Division 3 side and no complaints either. With the slope and the wind in their favour, Colts scored 5 goals before half-time as the Bevers' team struggled to even get the ball out of their own half. Some excellent 'keeping from Scott Lee kept the score down to a manageable number as the Colts threatened to run riot. After the break, Bevers were expected to put up more of a fight and to make the wind and slope work in their favour. Unfortunately this was not the case as Colts played some excellent football, keeping the ball on the ground and displaying some first class finishing to run in another 5 goals without reply. The Bevers' team looked completely out of their depth at times against a good team and failed to do themselves justice in most departments. The game was played in a good spirit with neither side committing a bad foul and John Borrill had one of the easiest games to referee in his long career.

v
B & M

 |
Venue:
Brigg Recreation Ground
Other details:
A close contest from the first whistle to the last, Bevers eventually overcame a spirited B&M side in a nervewracking penalty shootout. Bevers took the lead in the final minute of the first half with a close-range prod from Damon Arrand. (He'll probably insist it was another 35 yard piledriver but we know better!) B & M equalised early in the second half as the Bevers' defence were guilty of ball-watching. Damon Arrand scored his second of the game with a fine header following good approach play with Hough and Phillips combining well. Just as it looked that Bevers would sneak through, B&M equalised with a well-taken goal and the game went into extra time. The additional 30 minutes failed to produce a winner so the teams went into a penalty shootout. Benton, Phillips and Arrand scored for Bevers leaving B&M's fifth man with the chance to snatch the game but 'keeper Lee proved to be his match and the shootout went into sudden death. Hough and Dunn missed as did the next two B&M players and after Goddard made it 4-3 with the 15th penalty in total, Lee produced another save to see the Joinery boys through to Round 3 and an away tie at Broughton Town Colts.

v
Polish Club
|
 |
 |
Venue:
Goxhill
Other details:
On another windy but bright afternoon, Bevers welcomed Polish Club to a rather soggy Goxhill pitch for a friendly as both teams' opponents were playing Divisional Cup matches. The early exchanges were dominated by the pitch rather than the skill of either team and it was the pitch that proved to be the factor between them at the final whistle. Bevers scored the first through Carl Phillips, although this was cancelled out by Polish Club shortly afterwards. The second half followed much the same pattern as Damon Arrand took advantage of good work by Duncan Eaton and some loose marking by Polish to put Bevers in front(a spectacular strike from about 4 feet!), only for Polish to level the game again. At 2-2, the game was evenly balanced as both sides struggled to play anything like attractive football on the now awful surface. Arrand proved his worth (maybe 75p now!) with what proved to be the match winner with another stunning strike - open goal, 3 feet from the line - after the ball somehow evaded the Polish 'keeper as it came in from the right wing. Bevers would like to thank Polish for playing in such bad conditions and will gladly take them up on the offer of a return fixture later in the season. A brief mention too for the referee - well worth his match fee (and as I was that man, no disrespect to any Scunthorpe League official who may read this!)

Other details:
A welcome run out for the boys after a long layoff even if Crown gave them a lesson in taking chances. After a delay to kick-off due to a pitch confusion, Bevers had the advantage of a strong wind at their backs but failed to take advantage and Crown went in at half-time 1-0 up. The Bevers' boys literally fell apart in the second half - and it wasn't due to my reffing! - and conceded another 7 (of which at least 4 came in the last 10 minutes). Less of the arguments and more of the teamwork next time lads!

Other details:
An under-strength Bevers side travelled to Quibell Park to play Division 6 side Ashby Villa and came away on the wrong end of a 2-0 reverse. The boys have nothing to be ashamed of - Villa took their chances and Bevers didn't. The game was played mostly in good spirit and was a gentle introduction to the world of refereeing for Adam Goddard - they won't all be as easy as this one Adam!

Scunthorpe Ex-Servicemen
v
Bevers Joinery

 |
 |
Venue:
Quibell Park
Other details:
A bright but breezy day saw the Bevers' lads secure their third win of the season against a plucky Ex-Servicemen who can count themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from the game. Bevers started the game in their usual fashion, conceding an early goal as they looked anything but the team that had worked hard against Beacon last week. However, Damon Arrand scored with a spectacular (or read "lucky") lob from 30 yards - longer if the story in the pub afterwards is to be believed! to equalise. Tom Eaton made it 2-1 before half time as he beat the keeper to a loose ball and slid home. In the second half, Bevers took advantage of the wind and James Fairbank scored direct from a corner to make it 3-1 before Servicemen pulled one back after the Bevers' defence allowed the ball to travel across the box from the left and the Servicemen's winger nipped in to prod home from a couple of yards. Some good saves from Craig Dodd and a battling performance from most of the lads made sure Bevers hung on and despite a lot of pressure from the Servicemen, a 3-2 victory was achieved. Servicemen lost a player to injury in the first half as he fell awkwardly contesting a high ball and was taken to hospital for medical attention. Bevers hope the injury doesn't prove too serious and extend our warm wishes for a speedy recovery.
