DSV produced a polished performance this morning by running out comfortable 3-0 winners against Queens FC at West Common Lane.
With Darren Stanley, James Wilson, Dan Rowson, Mark Chapman, Benji Smith and Barney Haigh all missing from the squad, DSV included new signing Shaun Patchett but he had to be content with a place on the bench alongside Mark Jauncey and Richard Day as the Blues looked to put last weeks 5-1 drubbing against Bondz FC well and truly behind them.
DSV lined up with a 4-4-2 formation with Paul Maddison coming into the starting line-up alongside Lee Favil at the expense of the unfortunate Mark Jauncey. Mark Fisher was also recalled to the right hand side where Richard Day paid the price for not attending training as he was dropped to the bench.
The away side started shooting downhill and sought to gain an early advantage and it looked to have come as early as the fifth minute when Coley collected a long ball over the top and just as he controlled it he was blatantly shoved over in the box but the ref, in a great position, inexplicably waved play on. The Queens linesman even admitted 'That was the most blatant penalty I’ve ever seen'.
DSV continued to try and force openings, but their fluidity of recent weeks was badly missing as too many balls spent too much time in the air when all it needed was an air of calmness to force some openings. The first thirty minutes or so went by without too much incident but the away side did manage to take the lead on the half hour. Blythsy, finding himself in an advanced attacking position, brushed aside his marker as he bore down on goal and with the keeper beginning to come out to narrow the angle Blythsy.....***
**Ok, one of two things happened here and no one is quite sure what exactly occurred, so I’ll leave you to make up your own mind!**
Scenario A) Blythsy controlled the ball superbly and spotting the marauding run of Paul Maddison to his right he brilliantly looked up and squared a delightful ball into Paul's path where he steered the ball home from the edge of the area.
Scenario B) Blythsy got in ahead of the defender and with the keeper rushing out to him he tried to toe the ball past him but it caught the defenders foot and rebounded straight into the path of Paul who calmly shot home to give DSV the lead.
Whichever scenario is the correct one, it gave DSV the lead and Blythin was instrumental in the goal. Roberto Carlos, eat your heart out!
DSV almost added to their lead moments later when Mark Fisher received the ball wide on the right, cut in on his left foot and unleashed a powerful shot which the keeper was happy to beat away to safety.
Half Time: Queens 0 DSV 1
The first half was hardly a classic, but DSV managed to take into the break a one goal lead but were conscious of the fact that the next 45 minutes would be shooting uphill and were expectant of a testing second half from the home side.
This was never to materialise as a good half time chat worked wonders as DSV found their rhythm and went on to completely dominate the second half.
There were no changes at half time, although there very nearly were. But the same eleven started the second period like a house on fire by winning every individual battle on the pitch and taking the game to their hosts.
The midfield were well on top by now and with the solid back line of Fisher, Benton, Smylie & Blythin in total control of anything the home side could muster it was only a matter of time before DSV doubled their lead. They very nearly did so on 55 minutes when Favil worked himself a decent opening inside the area but saw his close range effort brilliantly saved by the keeper.
But there was no keeping the away side down and when Chris East picked the ball up some 25 yards out he unleashed a fantastic drive which was heading to the top corner, the shot had too much power for the keeper to deal with and as he still did well to keep out the stinging drive, he could only palm the ball back into the path of Paul Maddison who got in ahead of Favil to crack home his second goal of the game.
Hodsdon then decided to make a couple of changes but just as the fourth officials board went up to signal the changes, DSV added a third when a brilliant ball over the back of the defence from Coley found Paul Maddison who bore down on goal, with Lee Favil screaming for a square pass, Paul found the opportunity of a hat-trick too much to resist and elected to shoot, the keeper once again did excellently to keep the ball out but this time he could only push it into the path of Favil who made no mistake from two yards.
So 3-0 up and in cruise control, DSV did make two changes with Jauncey coming on to replace Coley and Shan Patchett came on for Smylie to make his debut in the centre of defence.
Chances kept coming DSV's way with first Paul Maddison twisting and turning inside the area to work himself a great opening, but the keeper was once again on hand to deny him by pushing his shot behind for a corner. Dayo swung over the resulting corner and Ben Harrison rose highest to power a header which was dipping under the bar but the keeper once again made a fabulous save to tip it over the bar.
Harrison then turned provider when he played a ball in for Favil whose first touch was fantastic and he set himself up a great shooting opportunity, but with just the keeper to beat he once again made a stunning save to top the ball around the post for another corner. Dayo once again swung it in and found Patch all alone in the box and his thumping header was somehow cleared off the line as it looked destined to put DSV 4-0 up.
The beleaguered home defence were clearly praying for full time and with it approaching, Lee Favil had a glorious chance to notch his second when once again he worked himself a great opening in the area but could only fire into the side netting.
This is where the game ended and in the end a comfortable 3-0 win for the DSV. It's fair to say that last weeks defeat to Bondz is well and truly behind them as they now go into a four week league break before their next fixture being the big local derby against Baysgarth Old Boys in Barton.
