General Introduction

The Society was inaugurated on 16th July 1998 and meets in committee every two months at the White Swan Hotel just a ticket flick from Barton station.

We are a formally constituted Rail User Group and our purpose is to promote and seek improvements to the services and infrastructure on the Barton branch in order to stimulate better use of this valuable community asset. We do this by holding regular constructive meetings with the train operator and by running special events that entail using the train. We also strive to communicate with the various Local Authorities and Parish Councils along the route and keep close links with the Rail Passenger Committee for North East England and the local branches of RailFuture. We sit on the Eastern Parishes Public Transport Partnership and attend national conferences on railway policy.

In 1999 we celebrated very successfully the 150th anniversary of the line. Each year we continue with such exciting events as music, beer, poetry, picnic, rambler and trolley trains, visits to places of railway interest and excursions for school children.

Our events are generally free and open to all but for five pounds per family per year paid up supporters help defray our expenses, are kept informed, receive priority bookings and have a say in running the Society. Members who so wish are sent the minutes of our meetings which also serve as a newsletter.

To join please write a cheque made out to Friends of the Barton Line and send it to the Membership Secretary (see Contact Us) or ask for an application form.
